Hard loss for our Brahmans
Souths Sharks take the win in a ‘physical game’
RUGBY LEAGUE: It was another hard loss for the Whitsunday Brahmans when they played Souths Sharks on Saturday night.
Played at a packed Les Stagg Oval, the A grade side left the field with a 36–12 scoreline but that didn’t mean they didn’t put up a fight.
Missing seven regular starters it was always going to be a tough ask for the Brahmans.
“We were a bit under strength ... (but) we still had a very capable team,” manager Bryce Fraser said.
At half-time, the Brahmans were down 10–6 and were still right in it.
By the second half, a number of penalties went to the Sharks, leaving the Brahmans with minimal chances to attack.
“We had a couple of send-offs, which didn’t help us either,” Fraser said.
Lona Kaifoto played a strong game after returning from playing for the Mackay Cutters. Harry Wecker had his first game back in the A-grade and played a “fantastic game”, Fraser said. And playing as consistently as always was Darcy Wright.
“It’s not good that we lost but we’ve got quite a few players returning next week so that should boost our strength and help us get back on the winning train again,” Fraser said.
The Reserve grade side was defeated on Saturday with a lopsided score of 46–4.
Against the unbeaten Sharks, the Brahmans started well with good yardage up the middle however silly mistakes hurt their cause. Down 26-4 at half-time, the second half began much like the first with the Brahmans punching their big pack through the middle but they simply couldn’t get the breakthrough.
The under-19s suffered their first loss of the season in a 34–14 defeat.
Too much turnover of possession proved costly for the Brahmans who were forced to defend for most of the game. Man of the match went to Luke Borghardt who later backed up and made his A grade debut. Special mention to Taine Browne and Joel Hoffmann who both scored after backing up from the under-17's.
All three teams will play Sarina at Les Stagg Oval on Saturday.
