LOOKING back at this time last year, there was definitely a sense of deja vu on more than one level.

Humpback whales were sighted by Oz Sail employee Alex Cunningham as his “Spank Me” vessel was cruising near Whitehaven Beach, despite them not being expected to appear until late June.

There was also discussion about the future of the Airlie Beach roundabout with Mayor Andrew Willcox announcing council would soon finalise plans for what came to be the Heart of the Reef entry statement.

The big story of the week surrounded a visit from the Consul-General of China, touching down in the Whitsundays for the first time as part of a bid to extend the Chinese market to the region.

Residents also had a chance to have their say on the Airlie Beach Foreshore Revitalisation Proposal.
