VOICES of dissent could be heard at the site of the Airlie Beach foreshore markets this time last year.

The protesters objected to a proposal by the Whitsunday Regional Council to move the markets to Fairy Tree Park.

The Save Our Foreshore group supported market stallholders and a petition with more than 1000 signatures was delivered to Cr John Collins stating the case that the markets remain at their current site.

In the lead-up to the federal election, candidates for the seat of Dawson pitched their views on election issues to voters.

A rowdy debate ensued over George Christensen’s denial of climate change and his belief that coral bleaching was caused by an El Nino weather pattern.

The markets did remain and Mr Christensen did win the election.
