Airlie’s fours champions take home their crowns
BOWLS: Last week was a big one for Airlie Beach Bowls Club, with the final of the ladies fours played on Tuesday.
Henney Tattam, Betty Whitehorn, Betty Nicolle and Margo Stanley were crowned the winners as they defeated Tess Walker, Elaine Kippen, Julie Stark and Ladda Purdie 19–13.
Social bowls numbers were down but a close game was played with Elma Astbury and Jill Spencer defeating Di Dobbins and Doreen Peadon 19–16.
Wednesday afternoon bowls was well attended, with the winners for the day being Paul Dunsford, Graeme Herd and Steve Tattam defeating Rick Galea, Tim Smith and Rick Brunell 24–20.
Other games were Bob Spees, Dom Sposato, David Dias and Russell Bramich defeating Neil Moore, Nick Fernbach, John Beach and Tony Whitehorn 22–16; Janet Jacometti, Lou Rogan and Louise Mahony defeated Terry Clark, Dinah Kosky and Ron Spence 19–18; and Colin Kosky and Herb Secomb defeated Jim Cairns and Michael Kosky 18–15.
Business house bowls was not played due to State of Origin.
Friday night barefoot bowls was slow due to the local Show Whitsunday being held but a small, enthusiastic crowd attended from the Island Gateway Caravan Park, along with owner Rod Neville, and a great time was had by all.
Saturday morning scroungers was again well attended and the winner for the day was Betty Whitehorn.
If players would like to join this happy group of bowlers, they can come along any Saturday morning to start at 10am.
Sunday social bowls was down in numbers due to the men playing away in their pennants games but the winners for the day were Terry Clarke, Bob Fenney and Ron Spence defeating Dinah Kosky, Colin Kosky and Betty Whitehorn 17–12.
The final of the ladies’ triples was also played on Sunday, with the winners being Elaine Hadlow, Betty Nicolle and Margo Stanley defeating Di Dobbins, Doreen Peadon and Lane Telford 26–14.
The men’s division two and division six were away playing pennants.
In a great run for the club both teams won their games, with division two beating Pioneer Valley by five points overall.
Division six played North Mackay and won by 23 points overall.
The club would like to say congratulations to the players.
Ladies in division four will play away in Marian on Wednesday, July 5.
