Pennants heating up
BOWLS: The Airlie Beach Bridge Club Pennants match at Marion last Wednesday resulted in a loss to the Airlie Division 3 ladies.
The Marion ladies played well on their home turf and defeated Airlie by 16 shots.
Social bowls on Wednesday afternoon welcomed visitors to Airlie Beach and there were some close games.
Wednesday evening Business House bowls winning teams were Whitsunday Transit, Fishing World, Woolies Allsorts and Whitsunday Parking.
The runners up were teams from ABH, Big 4 Adventures, Porters and Bendigo Bank.
The ABH and Fishing World are leading with 10 points and two weeks to go, but are closely followed by Whitsunday Parking and Whitsunday Transit on 9 points. Porters and Bendigo Bank are close with 8.
Saturday’s scroungers competition had a small group on a cool morning. Rink winners Ash Warland, Ladda Purdie and Duncan Smith played off in the final with Ash Warland winning.
The Men’s Pennants Division 6 had a home match on Saturday playing Mackay Bowling Club. Rodney Howard, Andrew McDougall, Rick Brunell and Rick Galea had an exciting win 19-11.
At the rink next door Steve Tattam, Graeme Herd, Andrew Butler and Peter Barrett won 31-10.
Sunday Division 6 men travelled to South Suburban in Mackay. Rodney Howard’s team won 23-14 and Steve Tattam’s team lost 16-24.
This led to the team getting 4 premiership points of a possible 5. Division 6 Airlie Beach is now leading the premiership table with 34 points, South Surburban has 29 points and Sarina running third has 26.5. There is one round to go. Next week the Division 6 boys will play Pioneer Valley at Airlie Beach. With the home team advantage they are in a good position to be promoted to Division 5 for next year.
On Saturday the men’s Division 2 played against Mackay City in Mackay.
Airlie Beach had a close win (two rinks out of three up) and a total of five shots up giving them the win.
On Sunday the men’s Division 2 had a home match against Marion team. It was an all up rinks win by a total of 13 shots. Andy Bell’s team won 15-13, Nathan Harriott’s team won 28-21 and Man Isgro’s team won 24-20 in frnot of a big crowd.
On Monday a round of the club championships triples was played and won by the team of Bob Spees, Rick Brunell and Neil Moore 19-13.
The ladies were represented at Proserpine for the MDLBA, PAH day by Betty Nicolle, Julie Stark and Henny Tattam.
HELD HIGH: The winner’s shield was presented to the Airlie Beach Bowls Club team of Tony Whitehorn, Wolfgang Keppke, Tim Whitehorn, Eva McMahon and Sarah Hillier.
