Pen­nants heat­ing up

BOWLS: The Air­lie Beach Bridge Club Pen­nants match at Mar­ion last Wed­nes­day re­sulted in a loss to the Air­lie Divi­sion 3 ladies.

The Mar­ion ladies played well on their home turf and de­feated Air­lie by 16 shots.

So­cial bowls on Wed­nes­day af­ter­noon wel­comed vis­i­tors to Air­lie Beach and there were some close games.

Wed­nes­day evening Busi­ness House bowls win­ning teams were Whit­sun­day Tran­sit, Fish­ing World, Woolies All­sorts and Whit­sun­day Park­ing.

The run­ners up were teams from ABH, Big 4 Ad­ven­tures, Porters and Bendigo Bank.

The ABH and Fish­ing World are lead­ing with 10 points and two weeks to go, but are closely fol­lowed by Whit­sun­day Park­ing and Whit­sun­day Tran­sit on 9 points. Porters and Bendigo Bank are close with 8.

Satur­day’s scroungers com­pe­ti­tion had a small group on a cool morn­ing. Rink win­ners Ash War­land, Ladda Pur­die and Dun­can Smith played off in the fi­nal with Ash War­land win­ning.

The Men’s Pen­nants Divi­sion 6 had a home match on Satur­day play­ing Mackay Bowl­ing Club. Rodney Howard, An­drew McDougall, Rick Brunell and Rick Galea had an ex­cit­ing win 19-11.

At the rink next door Steve Tat­tam, Graeme Herd, An­drew But­ler and Peter Bar­rett won 31-10.

Sun­day Divi­sion 6 men trav­elled to South Subur­ban in Mackay. Rodney Howard’s team won 23-14 and Steve Tat­tam’s team lost 16-24.

This led to the team get­ting 4 premier­ship points of a pos­si­ble 5. Divi­sion 6 Air­lie Beach is now lead­ing the premier­ship ta­ble with 34 points, South Sur­bur­ban has 29 points and Sa­rina run­ning third has 26.5. There is one round to go. Next week the Divi­sion 6 boys will play Pi­o­neer Val­ley at Air­lie Beach. With the home team ad­van­tage they are in a good po­si­tion to be pro­moted to Divi­sion 5 for next year.

On Satur­day the men’s Divi­sion 2 played against Mackay City in Mackay.

Air­lie Beach had a close win (two rinks out of three up) and a to­tal of five shots up giv­ing them the win.

On Sun­day the men’s Divi­sion 2 had a home match against Mar­ion team. It was an all up rinks win by a to­tal of 13 shots. Andy Bell’s team won 15-13, Nathan Har­riott’s team won 28-21 and Man Is­gro’s team won 24-20 in frnot of a big crowd.

On Mon­day a round of the club cham­pi­onships triples was played and won by the team of Bob Spees, Rick Brunell and Neil Moore 19-13.

The ladies were rep­re­sented at Proser­pine for the MDLBA, PAH day by Betty Ni­colle, Julie Stark and Henny Tat­tam.


HELD HIGH: The win­ner’s shield was pre­sented to the Air­lie Beach Bowls Club team of Tony White­horn, Wolf­gang Keppke, Tim White­horn, Eva McMa­hon and Sarah Hil­lier.
