Kids get planting for tree day

Day care kids get digging

Whitsunday Times - - KIDS’ ZONE -

THE kids of Lorraine and Desley’s Family Day Care rolled up their sleeves and got their hands dirty planting tomatoes last week in the lead up to National Tree Day.

Co-ordinator of Whitsunday Shire Family Day Care, Tracy Healey, said it was a wonderful day for the children.

“Every child and educator went home with their very own tomato plant kindly donated by Bunnings. We can’t wait to watch them grow and see what the educators and children make with them,” she said.

The Cannonvale and Proserpine plantings taught children about where food comes from and how to nurture a plant.

The kids learned that plants needed to “drink” and needed “food” and sunlight to grow.

Ms Healey said the activity would continue as the plants grew, with plans under way to make tomato soup come harvest time.
