Whitsunday Times - - NEWS -

IT WAS ready, set, go for Airlie Beach Race Week this time last year, with the event heralding the largest fleet on record.

However, this wasn’t all that made news this as South Molle Island was officially snapped up by Chinese company CCIG.

Outgoing owner Craig Ross described the moment as “bittersweet” and took aim at burdensome Queensland Government rules and regulations which “made matters worse” for island tenure after Cyclone Ului.

The first step toward the demolition of the South Molle jetty in Shute Harbour was also taken as council officially contracted Cardno Ullman and Nolan to conduct an assessment for a tender process on the infrastructure, which was costing ratepayers $300,000 each year. There was also extensive coverage of the 2016 Reef Festival, including fireworks and all of the family friendly activities that unfolded during one of the most iconic annual weekends in the Whitsunday region.
