Loving the Airlie lagoon
Milestone in cyclone recovery hit
THE Airlie Beach lagoon has reopened and it’s really made a splash for businesses in the area.
Airlie Book Boutique owner Belinda Harris said she was over the moon to announce that last Saturday after the reopening of the lagoon, the business recorded its best trade.
“I had my best day ever when the cruise ship was in,” she said.
“I was run off my feet and it’s just exciting. In the three months prior to the cyclone it was pretty sad for us and a lot of us were hanging on the Easter holidays which obviously never happened.
“So it’s been a long time coming. Just to see people is good. Towels are moving and things that have sat for months and months are selling.”
For young mums Tyme Henry and Marina Muffett the lagoon opening offered a place to take their bubs for a spring splash.
“It’s awesome and now that the weather is getting hotter. Today is his first time ever in the lagoon,” Ms Henry said.
Ms Henry’s seven-month-old son, Tanae Findlay, was having a ball in the sapphire-coloured water of the Airlie lagoon.
“It gives us more things to do and he loves the water.”
Carl Parkhill, who is the owner of Splash Pools, the principal contractor responsible for the lagoon refurbishment, said it was “very rewarding for the whole community”.
He said his employees had been working 15-hour days to meet the deadline set by the Whitsunday Regional Council.
“Normally this job would have taken four to five months; here we have done it in nine weeks,” he said.
Owner of the Wisdom Health Lab, Bec Wayman, said her business had picked up since the lagoon opened last Thursday.
“We have almost doubled our business,” she said.
“It has been a massive increase... it was a pretty quiet time there for those five months.”
“There was no one down here before and to see them here now here, is a positive Ms Wayman said.
