Junior cricket sign-on this Friday

Whitsunday Times - - SPORT -

CRICKET: Anyone contemplating giving junior cricket a crack this season will have the opportunity to get a feel for the game before signing up.

This Friday from 4pm, there will be a Milo-sponsored cricket game for kids aged five to eight, a Twenty20 blast for those aged eight to 10 and junior games for Under-13 and Under-16 cricketers.

This year will also see an Under-12 side compete in the Mackay competition for an ongoing basis on Saturdays.

Proserpine junior cricket club secretary Melinda O’Dwyer said people of all age groups could come down and give the game a go before signing up.

“It is a great, fun team sport for all abilities,” she said.

“It doesn’t matter if you don’t have your own cricket gear as there is some on the grounds if you need equipment.”

Junior sign-ups have already attracted more than 60 people, with a large influx of new players set to grace the cricket grounds on Kelsey Creek Rd.

Girls are particularly encouraged to get on board.

“We are doing a big push to get more girls to play this year,” O’Dwyer said.

“We have already got four girls registered and they will be able to mix in with the boys.”

Last year proved to be a successful period for the Proserpine club, with membership numbers rising to just below 100 and the high number of cricketers representing the Mackay and Whitsunday region.

O’Dwyer said players could progress beyond their age groups depending on their skills.

“If you register for one age group, we don’t necessarily keep you there the whole season,” she said.

“If you show ability then you can move up.”

Throughout the season there will be opportunities for interstate games, with the first one set for Home Hill in November.

The Proserpine side will take on Ingham and Bowen for the interstate contest.

Premier players aged 12 and up will also have the chance to play in the Mackay Whitsunday representative side, which will compete in state carnivals.

Last year six Proserpine players made the team.

New players receive a starter pack with their sign-on, including a backpack, bat, ball, shirt and water bottle.

Junior player sign-on costs $100 for a full season and $50 for a half season.
