Our Under-12 Scorchers win netball grand final
THE Whitsunday Netball Association Scorchers have taken out the grand final title defeating the Moranbah Sharks 30-23 in the Mackay Junior Competition played last weekend.
The Scorchers burnt a hole in the Sharks’ winning streak, taking out top spot in their first Mackay competition.
Coach Shabella Tronc said it was a fairytale ending for the girls who had developed significantly since the start of the year.
“Winning their grand final in the first year of playing in the Mackay competition is an outstanding achievement,” she said.
“They were playing together as a team and encouraging one another and staying focused on their game.
“They didn’t let the fact it was a grand final get to them even though there was that element of pressure in that game.”
The Scorchers finished third on the ladder in the 12B division but a four game winning streak landed them in the grand final.
Moranbah came out strong winning the first quarter but the Scorchers fought back, winning the next three.
President Shannon Lorraway said the club couldn’t be more proud.
“This is the best possible outcome they could have achieved,” she said.
WNA’s Under-14s player Kiarni Hinton was selected for the 14 Years Maroon Monarchs in her first year of trialling.
In August, Kiarni was awarded Most Valuable Player in the 14 Years Maroon Monarchs rep team.
Kiarni was also awarded WNA Most Valuable Junior Player (Hayley Bachman Memorial Shield) for 2018.
Ms Lorraway said the year had been massively successful for Kiarni.
“To receive MVP in such a talented group of players from around the region is an outstanding achievement for Kiarni,” she said.
“We are incredibly proud of her and excited for the bright netball future she has ahead.”
Kiarni has represented the WNA and Mackay Netball Association at the Queensland State Age Championships as co-captain of the U14 A side Mackay Monarchs representative netball team.
At state age she played 13 full games of the 14 games they played, only sitting off once. More on WNA at the Facebook page or via the website.
