Opportunity in common for all

Whitsunday Times - - NEWS - AL GRUNDY Tourism Whitsundays chairman

IT WAS great to meet with the Great Barrier Reef Foundation last week.

My key takeaway message was that the goal is common opportunity.

We have the right people with the right skills and knowledge to assist the GBR, but we just need to get them all at the same table.

The GBR Foundation, which formed 18 years ago, is focused on connecting and educating people around the reef and providing hope for the future of the reef.

The Reef Trust, working in partnership with the GBR Foundation is aimed at delivering activities and programs which lead to transformational change for the reef. The GBR Foundation has a strong record of raising money from global philanthropic donors which is one of the reasons that the government chose GBR Foundation to further leverage the funding.

Meanwhile, the recent pest free initiative launched by national parks is a timely reminder to everyone moving from the mainland to the islands, and from island to island, to be very mindful that you only leave footprints and take only photos. We are fortunate that the great majority of our islands remain pest free, however, some pests have made the islands home.

Cane toads are present on a couple of the islands and even ants have been introduced at Tongue Bay.

So, if you are heading out on a trip, please check your bags are free from seeds and insects or rodents.

If you go to a beach on an island and place your gear on the ground, just check it is free of ants before you leave.

If walking on our tracks, stay on the marked tracks to avoid spreading the seeds.

For more information check out the Be pest free Queensland website and you will find a brochure to download.

I would like to also encourage all Whitsundays residents to have their say on the new Whitsundays brand redevelopment.

The brand redevelopment is taking place in partnership with Whitsunday Regional Council and is the first time that the brand has been redeveloped since the Whitsundays grew as a region many years ago.

All Whitsunday residents can have their say on the new brand and should only take a few minutes to complete. The survey is open until October 5 at https://fs29.formsite.com /Dest/form27/index.html.

We have the right people with the right skills and knowledge to assist the GBR Foundation, but we just need to get them all at the same table.
