Op­por­tu­nity in com­mon for all

IT WAS great to meet with the Great Bar­rier Reef Foun­da­tion last week.

My key take­away mes­sage was that the goal is com­mon op­por­tu­nity.

We have the right peo­ple with the right skills and knowl­edge to as­sist the GBR, but we just need to get them all at the same ta­ble.

The GBR Foun­da­tion, which formed 18 years ago, is fo­cused on con­nect­ing and ed­u­cat­ing peo­ple around the reef and pro­vid­ing hope for the fu­ture of the reef.

The Reef Trust, work­ing in part­ner­ship with the GBR Foun­da­tion is aimed at de­liv­er­ing ac­tiv­i­ties and pro­grams which lead to trans­for­ma­tional change for the reef. The GBR Foun­da­tion has a strong record of rais­ing money from global phil­an­thropic donors which is one of the rea­sons that the govern­ment chose GBR Foun­da­tion to fur­ther lever­age the fund­ing.

Mean­while, the re­cent pest free ini­tia­tive launched by na­tional parks is a timely re­minder to ev­ery­one mov­ing from the main­land to the is­lands, and from is­land to is­land, to be very mind­ful that you only leave foot­prints and take only pho­tos. We are for­tu­nate that the great ma­jor­ity of our is­lands re­main pest free, how­ever, some pests have made the is­lands home.

Cane toads are present on a cou­ple of the is­lands and even ants have been in­tro­duced at Tongue Bay.

So, if you are head­ing out on a trip, please check your bags are free from seeds and in­sects or ro­dents.

If you go to a beach on an is­land and place your gear on the ground, just check it is free of ants be­fore you leave.

If walk­ing on our tracks, stay on the marked tracks to avoid spread­ing the seeds.

I would like to also en­cour­age all Whit­sun­days res­i­dents to have their say on the new Whit­sun­days brand re­de­vel­op­ment.

The brand re­de­vel­op­ment is tak­ing place in part­ner­ship with Whit­sun­day Re­gional Coun­cil and is the first time that the brand has been re­de­vel­oped since the Whit­sun­days grew as a re­gion many years ago.
