Spring’s in the air as vis­i­tors se­cure tri­umph

GOLF: The NQ Men’s Pen­nants were played over the week­end, C-Grade played at Proser­pine, B-Grade staged at Sa­rina and the A-Grade con­tested at Pioneer Val­ley.

The C-Grade saw some suc­cess for the lo­cals on Satur­day, win­ning both matches com­fort­ably against Collinsville and Bowen, but on Sun­day Ayr proved too strong, win­ning five and a half games to Proser­pine’s one and a half, to take out Di­vi­sion two.

Home Hill made it a “Bur­dekin” week­end by tak­ing out the Di­vi­sion three on a count­back, and Black Springs proved too strong over Rowes Bay, Mackay and Lavarack in Di­vi­sion one.

The A-Grade se­cured only one win over the week­end, be­ing de­feated by both Ayr and Home Hill.

Un­for­tu­nately, the B-Graders suf­fered an­other de­feat, not win­ning a match and be­ing rel­e­gated to di­vi­sion three for next year.

Spon­sors for the week­end were BC Con­struc­tions, Bartz Plumb­ing and Ryan Build­ing.

In Proser­pine Golf Club ac­tion Thurs­day’s men’s sin­gle sta­ble­ford at­tracted 54 play­ers, with some good scores recorded.

Mark Schu­bert was the 18-hole win­ner with 42 points, from John Roser, Glenn McKer­ley, Wayne Temby and Paul Joice, all on 39 points.

Rod Wecker, Nathan Holmes, James Dev­ery, Barry Mor­timer, Fraser Simp­son, Jim Dow­ell and Bren­don Me­harry fol­lowed on 38, while Steve Mitchell and Ge­off Fitzsim­mons had 37.

Com­plet­ing the run down were Michael Cragg, John Grosskreutz, Trevor Paroz and Jim Grace on 36.

The nine-hole com­pe­ti­tion was won by Rod Wecker, 22, on a count­back from Michael Cragg with Mark Schu­bert com­ing in in third place with 21 points.

The pin shots went to John Roser on two, Travis Clinch on nine, Lew Tuck 13 and Nathan Holmes on 16.

The Ladies’ monthly medal played on Oc­to­ber 3 was won by Pam Casey with a fine 68 nett. Run­ner-up was Mandy Pat­ter­son on71.

In the run down were Wendy Bradley, Tessa Aitken and Kath Borer.

The pin shots went to Wendy Gough on nine, Pam Casey 13 and Wendy Bradley on 16.

Next Satur­day will see the Volk­swa­gen Scram­ble for the ladies run af­ter 11.30am, and be­fore this will be a sin­gle sta­ble­ford for the men.

The open Volk­swa­gen Scram­ble will be held on Novem­ber 17.
