HOW MADONNA IS RAISING MALAWI

According to Global Finance Magazine, the southeast African nation of Malawi is the sixth-poorest country in the world. Since she launched her Raising Malawi charity in 2006, Madonna’s goal for the people of Malawi has been simple: “I want to help them help themselves,” she says. The new Mercy James Centre is a primary example of that, as the hospital doubles as a teaching facility. “It will have a huge impact,” says Dr Eric Borgstein, one of only four paediatric surgeons in the country, who teamed with the star to establish the hospital. “She is engaged on a daily basis in a way that people who just write cheques are not,” says adviser Trevor Neilson. “There’s no person like Madonna who has ever done something as complex as she has just done with the hospital. She is tough, smart and extremely committed to this country.”

The Jacaranda School for Orphans choir sang for Madonna (with daughter Estere) at the opening of the hospital on July 11.
