MY RED-CARPET SURVIVAL GUIDE

The Project Runway nominee is known for his fine taste, but Tim Gunn’s tips for getting through the night are surprisingly low-key

1 KEEP THE PRIMPING TO A MINIMUM

I’m like a self-cleaning oven—i like tending to myself. I’ll have my hair cut before I go, give myself a manicure and put on moisturiser. To not have all that pomp and circumstance is calming. I’m happy I don’t feel like I need all that.

2 TRAVEL LIGHT

Avoid putting anything in your pocket that can create a bulge. I just keep a handkerchief and Breath Savers mints in my jacket. They’re small, and it’s a nice little safety net if you have a dry throat or worse.

3 GO HOME HAPPY

I remember one year Ellen Degeneres hosted and in her opening monologue she said, “I want you all to know that most of you will leave here as losers.” I looked around and thought, she’s right! It’s an honour just to be nominated. But much more thrilling to win!

4 LINE UP A GREAT DATE

The first time I walked the carpet, in 2005, I was alone and photographers were screaming at me to get out of the way. I was beside myself. Being with Heidi Klum is the antidote to that. She takes my anxieties away.

Project Runway stars Gunn and Heidi Klum make it work.
