5 PATTI CAKE$
As with most things New Jersey, a strain of Bruce Springsteen runs through this tale of a down-and-out working-class heroine with dreams of glory. Only it’s modern times and what Patricia Dombrowski (terrific newcomer Macdonald, see p. 88) really wants to be is a rapper. Spoiler alert: she’s good at it. Teaming up with her best friend Jheri (Siddharth Dhananjay) and an oddball punk-anarchist (Mamoudou Athie), she cuts some ultracatchy demos (the songs were written by director Geremy Jasper, a former rocker and musicvideo helmer). But it’s not that easy, and Macdonald and Bridget Everett, as Patti’s alcoholic mother, bring tears as well as joy to what could be a cult hit. (Out now)
Bardem and Lawrence in Mother!: “It is closer to Black Swan in spirit than anything I have done in a while,” says Aronofsky.
Patti (Macdonald, with Dhananjay) spits in spite of the odds.
