Frocks and finery make a strong showing at the race that stops a nation
SKIRTS AND HATS WERE IN peril from strong wind gusts, but the rain held off while an Irish horse romped home to claim victory at the Nov. 7 Melbourne Cup in Flemington. “I just can’t believe it,” said jockey Corey Brown, who rode Rekindling across the line, claiming a $3.6 million win in a dramatic last-second snatch from fellow Irish horse Johannes Vermeer. “Corey gave an unbelievable ride,” said Rekindling’s trainer, Joseph O’brien, victorious in his first Cup. “It hasn’t really sunk in yet to be honest.”
But while punters stayed keenly focused on the track, fashion followers’ eyes were on the frocks and hats trackside. Bright jewel tones made a colourful change from the strict black-and-white tones of Derby Day three days before (see next page). Everything from wide brims to jewelled headbands stood out on the blustery afternoon. Jennifer Hawkins’s floaty Alex Perry dress (“Um, a tad windy,” she posted) caught the breeze. “It’s a bit tricky but I’ve got an overcoat,” said presenter Rachael Finch. Visiting starlet Paris Jackson chose a rust-coloured dress from Morrison over the custom red one Perry reportedly made for her (sources told Fairfax she wasn’t a fan of the Perry number). Posing with Jackson for a snap, Finch wrote, “What a beautiful soul.”
Jennifer Hawkins held it together in a custom Alex Perry dress, Azara headpiece and Giambattista Valli sandals. Newly engaged actress Pia Miller (see p. 14) donned a Sarah J. Jockey Corey Brown rode Rekindling past Johannes Vermeer and Max Dynamite to win the Melbourne Cup on Nov. 7.
Anna Heinrich was “feeling like sunshine” in Rebecca Vallance with a Scanlan Theodore headpiece.
Sports Illustrated model Robyn Lawley took the plunge in maroon. She attended the race with Olympic swimmer James Roberts.
Lleyton Hewitt and wife Bec (in Sass and Bide) looked in fine form, although Bec joked on Instagram, “Just popping out to get milk!” As part of her first trip to Australia, Myer guest Paris Jackson arrived at Flemington in an Ann Shoebridge topper.
The Bachelor Matty Johnson’s final rose winner, Laura Byrne, got her lacy jumpsuit from the Glamour House. Actress Jane Seymour told the Sunday HeraldSun that she has also been to Royal Ascot and the Kentucky Derby.
