To make space for all the cus­tomis­ing you can do to the Start menu, you can eas­ily re­size it to your lik­ing. Just move your mouse pointer to the top-border or right-border of the Start menu, the pointer will change into ar­rows, and you’ll be able to in­crease or de­crease height and width, drag­ging it out to com­pletely fill the screen if you want to. This is par­tic­u­larly use­ful if you have a PC filled with pro­grams that you ac­cess reg­u­larly.
