Free up space on  A small hard drive

Windows Help & Advice - - SUPPORT TECHNICAL HELP -

QMy 2-in-1 PC often fails to download Windows Updates due to a lack of storage space. Can you advise how I can keep things running smoothly? Joe Bennett Nate’s solution 2-in-1 PCs tend to have limited storage space at the best of times, so it pays to try and minimise the wasted space on it. Here are several techniques that can help secure enough space, so Windows Update always operates properly.

Storage sense 1

Click Start > Settings > System > Storage and flick the ‘Storage sense’ button on. This enables Windows to automatically clear specific parts of your system, such as temp files and downloads, when you start running out of drive space.

Tweak settings 2

Click ‘Change how we free up space’ to control how Storage sense works – by default Windows chooses when to run it, but you can force it to run on a schedule. You can also fine-tune when it removes temp files and add downloads, too.

Manual cleanup 3

To clean more files from your computer, type disk cleanup into the search box to run the Disk Clean-up tool. Click ‘Clean up system files’ to include additional files – it’s possible to free up gigabytes of drive space quite quickly, but make sure you have a backup!

Move apps 4

If your 2-in-1 device has a microSD card slot, insert a suitable card as extra storage and then move Microsoft Store apps to it via Start > Settings > Apps. Work through the list clicking on apps looking for a Move button to free up extra space.
