Rachael and michael
Rachael Finch, 29, discovered two great loves when she was on Dancing With The
Stars back in 2010: one, her now-husband Michael Miziner, 33, a Ukrainian-born ballroom dancer; and two, dance itself. Rachael had no dance experience until she met Michael (aka Misha) – a three-time Australian champion – on the TV show, but she fell completely in love with the activity. So much so, that she and Michael recently created their own dancebased fitness program, Body of Dance by Rachael Finch.
So what is it about dance that sparked her passion? “I think because it’s mind, body and soul; it’s not just trashing yourself at the gym,” she says. “It’s not just about building muscle or improving my butt; it’s the whole essence of dance that I love. The coordination, the musicality, the connection, the timing, as well as the physical side of it. You become so aware of your body that you really come to respect it more.”
Michael adds that dance is great for fitness because it isn’t monotonous.
“So you don’t actually notice how much you’ve done until you stop.”
The pair dance together, parent together (they have two young kids) and even work together – and that’s a great thing, they agree. “We pretty much do everything together,” says Rachael. “We work out together, we dance together, we do the programs together. So all our business and life is shared. We love it. If anything, working together has strengthened our relationship. I’ve learnt a lot about Misha and he’s learnt a lot about me that we wouldn’t have otherwise known.”
One thing Michael’s learnt from Rachael is patience, he says. “When we first met I wasn’t so patient. I like to jump into things sometimes a bit too fast, but she likes to take things slower.”
What she’s picked up from him? “Sticking at something and working hard. He’s empowered me to know that when I think it’s enough, it’s nowhere near enough. So when I think
I’ve reached my limits – I think ‘I’m tired’ or ‘That’s a goodenough result’ – no, that’s just the starting line. It’s enabled me to physically and emotionally thrive in life.”
