Us­ing its body-length pro­boscis, the fe­male acorn wee­vil drills a hole in the shell of an acorn so that it can lay a sin­gle egg in the open­ing. This makes an ideal nurs­ery for de­vel­op­ing lar­vae as they’re pro­tected from preda­tors and pro­vided with suf­fi­cient nu­tri­ents.
