Tokyo is the largest met­ro­pol­i­tan area on the planet. In spite of this, its 40 mil­lion res­i­dents are safer than they would be in any other ur­ban sprawl in the world. The real danger in Tokyo is posed not by crime but by na­ture, some­thing city plan­ners are only too aware of. They reg­u­larly re­con­struct parts of Tokyo to pro­tect the city from earth­quakes. Only one in five homes pre­dates 1981.
