In 2015, over 51,000 bush­fires rav­aged some 11 mil­lion hectares of land in the US – an area twice the size of Tas­ma­nia. There are now six times as many fires as there were 30 years ago and they’re get­ting big­ger. “We are wit­ness­ing an in­creas­ing in­stance of these megafires,” says Tom Swet­nam, di­rec­tor of the Lab­o­ra­tory of Tree-ring Re­search at the Univer­sity of Ari­zona.
