Thirteen years ago, this was still farmland. Today, it’s one of the most important archaeological digs in Europe and this is just a fraction of it. Experts have already uncovered 28 structures in the Ness of Brodgar, but that’s merely a tenth of what they suspect lies underground. And even that might just be a tiny section of the vast ancient infrastructure on the Orkney Islands. “Turn over a rock around here and you’re likely to find a new site,” says archaeologist Julie Gibson.
