Hume Veterans Cycling Club
Last Saturday saw the running of the VVCC Open ‘George Goodwin Memorial’ races, promoted by the Hume Veterans Cycling Club, named in honour of the Hume Club’s Life Member, Patron and Cycling’s Hall of Fame, the late George Goodwin.
Sixty riders from throughout the eleven Victorian veteran clubs with ages ranging from 35 to their mid-80s vied for the six winners trophies from the six grades, all to be presented by Audrey Goodwin who had travelled from Melbourne for the auspicious occasion.
The course which sent riders from Benalla, out to Ryan’s Creek and through Lurg and back to Benalla saw divisions 4, 5 and 6 racing for 50kms and the grades of 1, 2 and 3 having a second loop of Lurg taking their race distance to 72kms.
Most groups stayed intact up to the finish line for a bunch sprint with only a few riders finding the climbs or the grade a bit too tough.
GV’s Peter McClelland (Div 4) had his success with the only ‘ride-away’ win of the day finishing 45 seconds ahead of his rivals. Results:
