Six Mulwala Water Ski Club skiers have starred in the 2107 Barefoot Nationals in Perth, all achieving PBs and there was a big announcement at the presentation dinner.

Representing the Victorian Barefoot Club with 13 other skiers throughout the State at Booneys Water Ski Park from April 24 to 29, it was the inaugural nationals for locals Macey Hicks, and Macy and Zali Peebles.

Competing in the sub junior class, Zali achieved a great result, finishing first overall after recording equal first, with Macey, in Slalom and second in Trick.

Also in the sub junior class, Macey finished first in Jump, Second in Trick and equal sec- ond in Slalom for an overall excellent second finish.

Also in her first nationals, Macy Peebles performed well, finishing third in Slalom and fourth overall in the sub junior class.

Abbey Hicks and Cooper Elliott skied extremely well in this, their third nationals event.

In the junior girls section, Abbey finished best in Jump, second in Trick, second also in Slalom for an overall second.

In the junior boys class Cooper finished second in Jumps, third in Tricks and came in for a creditable overall fourth in what was the biggest class on the program.

Proud parents said all the skiers performed fantastically well and with all achieving their Personal Bests, is testament to the ability of their coach Peter O’Neill.

They acknowledged Peter’s many hours training the youngsters in the early mornings before school. Those parents of the talented youngsters - Kyle and Dot Hicks, Heath and Amanda Peebles, and Mark and Kylie Elliott - also put in lots of hours on the river perfecting their skills and transporting the skiers to their training and tournaments.

The highly respected coach said the performances of all six participating skiers were “really impressive, outscoring their best scores”. “Their hard work has paid off - they are hard workers,” 10-time Australian champion Peter told the Yarrawonga Chronicle.

All six skiers are team members of the Mulwala Water Ski Show Team (Team NSW) which won the Australian Show Ski National Titles at Mulwala earlier this year.

Abbey and Macey Hicks, and Peter O’Neill were also members of the Australian team which competed at the Show Ski World Titles in the USA last year.

At the presentation dinner in Perth a fortnight ago, there was plenty of excitement with trophy announcements and then a bigger announcement about selections in the Australian Junior Squad for the 2018 World Barefoot Titles in Canada.

Cooper and Abbey have been selected in the 14-member squad, with numbers to reduce to six for the team. The Year 10 and Year 11 students are wished all the best in their pursuit of representing Australia in Canada next year.

It was a very pleased coach on hearing the news in Perth. “It reflects their hard training over the last two years and dedication towards their craft,” Peter said.

In Perth, Victoria’s 19-skier team finished runner-up overall to NSW but won the Junior Shield and the Supporters Shield.

The girls receiving their gold medal for slalom and bronze for Macy Peebles.

Abbey receiving her jumps gold medal.
