Experiences beyond the classroom at Sacred Heart College
One of the learning experiences Sacred Heart College students really enjoy are the annual camps scheduled for each of the year levels.
The camps are designed to focus on difference aspects of learning for each age group.
The Year 7 camp, held not long after school starts each year, sees the new secondary students travel to Kyneton to the Campaspe Downs Adventure Camp.
The students enjoy abseiling, archery, bush walking, raft building and, the favourite, the flying fox.
This camp is about getting to know each other at the beginning of year seven and building relationships that will last throughout secondary school.
The Year 8s head off to Phillip Island for their camp, to enjoy three days of beach activities.
This camp gives the students a change to enjoy an environment they may not get to experience very often. Canoeing, raft making, ropes courses and flying foxes are some of the activities the students enjoy.
One of the highlights of a student’s time at Sacred Heart College is the Year 9 camp to the Northern Territory.
Some of the experiences that are enjoyed on this 8 day camp include visits Edith Falls, Katherine Gorge, Kakadu and the Tindal Air Base.
The students camp in various locations and really enjoy their time away, experiencing new things and learning about themselves at the same time.
The focus for the Year 10 students on their camp is to build confidence and develop skills in working as a team.
They do this while experiencing challenging outdoor activities in the Victorian Alpine country, including abseiling, bike riding, bush walking at Mount Buffalo and a cave climb.
Careers, community and culture is the theme for the Year 11 camp to Melbourne.
Staying in the CBD, the students visit the Careers Expo, Melbourne University, Etihad Stadium and The Big Issue and experience Melbourne’s food and street culture.
To begin their final year of secondary education the Year 12 cohort participates in a retreat to Harrietville.
They students have motivational, reflection and goal setting sessions and listen to the experiences of the prior year’s students.
They return to school stimulated to work hard and push themselves to achieve their potential.
School camps are a great extra-curricular program and an important part of the school calendar.
They are a great activity to promote working in a team, to learn about others and to build strong relationships forming an invaluable part of the curriculum at Sacred Heart College.
