Nominations are being sought for community representatives to join the Moira Shire Disability Advisory Committee.

The committee provides open and direct consultation to council on planning and policy development in areas of disability services and accessibility.

Committee member Deb Cooper from Yarrawonga Neighbourhood House said the community representative position was a great opportunity to hear from people with the most experience.

“Whether as a person living with a disability, or someone caring for a person with a disability, those community members have the day to day experience to best inform the committee and council,” she said.

“The committee considers issue of access for people with a disability, both in a physical sense in terms of visiting community facilities or shops or issues with parking or footpaths, and in a well-being sense in terms of connection to the community.

“It’s a great opportunity to provide information and feedback to council.”

Ms Cooper represents Yarrawonga Neighbourhood House on the Disability Advisory Committee which also has members from similar community services in Cobram, Numurkah and Nathalia, professionals from within the disability/accessibility sector and community representatives.

Renee McCarthy, a graduate of the Women with Disabilities Victoria Enabling Women Leadership Program, is also a member of the committee.

Meetings are held bi-monthly at various locations throughout the shire.

“Community representatives can provide feedback about their day to day issues with accessibility,” Ms Cooper said.

“As people who have a disability or as carers they are directly affected by those issues and they can identify issues of accessibility that other people take for granted.

“No-one has to be an expert, just have the interest and the drive to be involved in improving the lives of people in the Moira Shire who have a disability.”

More information on the Disability Advisory Committee and vacancies, as well as the Moira Shire Council Disability Access and Inclusion Plan is available on the council website at www.moira.vic.gov.au under ‘Community and Townships’.
