Hot weather hotter golf

Yarrawonga Chronicle - - Sport - BY ROBERT MUIR

A course-equalling record which included a hole-in-one - that was Frazer Droop’s second round of golf in his first ever Australasian Tour Event which was held in Darwin from last Thursday to Sunday.

Competing in a star-studded field of 120 players, 20-year-old Droop fired an eight-under-par round of 63 last Friday in the Northern Territory PGA Championship at Palmerston.

The round comprised seven birdies, a bogey and the eagle one on the fourth Par 3 hole.

Playing in 33 to 35degrees Celsius temperatures, our star local fired a first round two-under-par 69, followed by the sizzling 63, a oneover-par 72 and a three-over-par final round of 74 for an overall six-under-par total of 278, for a tied 26th position - with the likes of New Zealand champion Michael Long - 13 shots adrift of the winner. Another local star, Adam Burdett, missed the cut.

The ace on Palmerston’s 106 metre seventh hole, with a strong sand iron shot which shaped beautifully into the hole, was Droop’s second competition hole-in-one. For this achievement, Droop is 333,000 frequent flyer points better off.

Palmerston Golf & Country Club has two contrasting nines.

The back nine is a strong challenge with long fairways, demanding greens and water coming into play on six holes. The front nine is well wooded and demands accuracy off the tee.

This week’s NSW Trainee Championship in Sydney featuring our local talent will have local golfing enthusiasts following with interest.

Local golf star Frazer Droop hit a hole-in-one in his first Australasian tour event.
