Mulwala finals campaign ends

Yarrawonga Chronicle - - Classies Classies -

The last hope for Mulwala, the C Grade netball team, bowed out this week in a tough semifinal against a determined Finley side.

In near perfect conditions the Lions were ready to take on the Cats, having gone down to Finley by only 5 goals in the last round of the season.

A few steadfast supporters made the trek to Numurkah to support the Lions in their finals campaign.

Sadly though, this was to be their last game of the season.

The match started well, with both sides finding a direct line into goals and the shooters demonstrating great accuracy at both ends of the court.

The Lions trailed by 3 goals at the quarter time break but confidence was high as they resumed play in the second.

The Cats came out firing, taking the Lions by surprise and forcing a number of turnovers which they were able to capitalise on.

Mulwala was rattled, with costly errors creeping into the game and affecting their confidence, while Finley continued to build their lead, pushing the margin out to 14 by half time.

More positional changes were made in an effort to counteract the Finley attack and the third quarter saw an improvement in defensive pressure and passages of play down the court.

The Cats however seemed to have the momentum as they continued to build their lead to 23 by three quarter time.

At the final break, passionate words from Coach Rhonda and Captain Mary had the desired effect and the Lions took to the court with nothing to lose.

They worked hard and started to peg back the lead, winning the quarter by 3 goals. Unfortunately though, all was too late and Finley ran out comfortable winners 55 to 35.
