The result of the Moira Shire Council Yarrawonga Mulwala Bridge Plebiscite has “no formal bearing on the preferred route decision for the Yarrawonga Mulwala bridge replacement” according to VicRoads.

The Yarrawonga Chronicle contacted VicRoads after the plebiscite conducted by the Victorian Electoral Commission on behalf of Moira Shire Council delivered a resounding vote in favour of the green route to enquire if the result would have an impact on the status of the current project.

“VicRoads is moving ahead with the ‘grey route’ option that was determined after extensive community consultation,” said VicRoads North Eastern Regional Director Nicki Kyriakou.

“We considered a number of factors and the selected route remains the best solution to take trucks off Belmore Street, reduce congestion and provide better access for cyclists and pedestrians.”

VicRoads reiterated that the plebiscite vote has no formal bearing on the route decision for the Yarrawonga Mulwala bridge and that the roads authority is proceeding with finalising the referral for an Environmental Effects Statement on the grey route to be sent to the Department of Transport, Planning and Local Infrastructure for determination.

The outcome of the referral, which VicRoads will seek to submit in October, will determine the requirements for the planning approval process.
