Bay 13 dilemma

Federation Council is to review a decision to demolish and remove the Lonsdale Reserve Mulwala building known as ‘Bay 13’.

On June 29, council administrator Mike Eden agreed to have the building removed which did not please Mulwala Progress Association.

Association secretary Stephen Flanagan formally expressed disappointment on August 13 at the decision, believing the building could be restored and become usable again, at a cost much less than council’s estimated $250,000.

He asked for council to hold off a final decision until the newly elected councillors could make the decision on Bay 13’s future or replacement.

Newly-elected Cr Bronwyn Thomas successfully moved a motion to meet with all rel- evant stakeholders to review the situation and report back for council’s October meeting.

“We want some really good relationships between Federation Council and the Lonsdale Reserve Committee,” she said.

Council staff believes demolition of the existing termite-infected structure and erection of a modern replacement toilet block and storage shed for an estimated $175,000 is the better option.

But Federation councillors backed Cr Thomas’s call at council’s monthly meeting on September 26 for a review, on the motion of Crs Thomas and Fred Longmire, especially as some councillors have queried the estimated costs of repair work.

Council’s resolution is to consider completing the designed roadway and drainage strategy, and in consultation with user groups, prepare a delivery program for Bay 13 with consideration towards the Lonsdale Reserve Master Plan and available funding.
