‘1000 Books Before School’ champion
Yarrawonga Library is celebrating the first child to achieve the remarkable milestone of reading 1000 books before school.
One-year old Henry regularly attends Rhyme Story Time at the library and enjoys reading every day with his parents.
He proudly brings his reading record in each time he visits to have it updated.
The 1000 Books Before School program encourages parents and carers to provide positive early experiences of reading at home by reading 1000 books with their children before they begin school.
It is open to all children aged 0-5 years and parents are encouraged to come in to register their children.
Children will receive a registration pack including a tote bag, stickers and reading records.
Each time a book is read to a child, a sticker is placed on their reading record.
When a reading milestone has been achieved (for example 100 books), they are rewarded with a small prize.
This early years literacy campaign is a joint initiative of State Library Victoria and Public Libraries Victoria Network and is being run in 40 public library services across Victoria.
