National titles for Jack
Yarrawonga tennis player Jack Bassett will represent Victoria in the prestigious Bruce Cup in Shepparton between October 14 and October 21.
The Bruce Cup is a team based event contested between the eight states and territories. Each team consists of seven boys and seven girls of Primary school age. The competition will involve players playing a singles, doubles and a mixed doubles match each day against each team. The tennis will be of an excellent standard with the best junior players from Australia trying to win matches for their state.
Jack was invited to try out for the team in July. He was the only boy out of 32 invited that was from a rural area and he won all his matches on the day to ensure his selection for the team.
Since his selection Jack has travelled to Melbourne on three separate weekends to train with the other state team members. This has been an enjoyable experience and the chance to practice with the best players in Victoria has been invaluable.
Currently Jack is ranked third in the state for his age which is commendable considering that competition tennis for metropolitan children is available all year round.
Jack is extremely fortunate to have local legend Jon Coleman as his long term coach. Jack has been under the tutorage of Jon for five years and is extremely grateful for Jon instilling in him a focus on technique but more importantly the enjoyment of tennis.
Jack spends countless hours, especially over summer, at the Yarrawonga Lawn Tennis Club and the support of the Tennis Club is certainly appreciated. Current Club Coach Greg Duns has been very helpful especially through his organisation of the Squad Program.
Jack spent the recent school holidays playing three separate tournaments in Sale, Wodonga and Taralgon. From these ranking points tournaments he was runners up in the three doubles events, runners up two singles events and made the semifinals in the other singles event. This was excellent preparation with some very long and challenging matches against boys from as far away as Adelaide and Sydney throughout the tournaments.
The costs associated with training and competing in the Bruce Cup have been substantial. Jack has been grateful for the support of the community members who have purchased School Support Raffle Tickets.
Jack is also extremely appreciative to some local organisations who have provided some generous sponsorship to enable him to represent Victoria. Yarrawonga College P-12, Yarrawonga Lawn Tennis Club, Burramine Sports Club, ClubMulwala, Godfathers and the Swinger Hotel Social Golf Club each provided generous donations and their support is greatly appreciated.
Jack is looking forward to an event that will certainly prove memorable.
