Two centuries win the day for the Lakers
History was rewritten at the Gardens Oval in Benalla on Saturday with centuries to both Josh Lawrence and Matt Casey for the Yarrawonga Mulwala Cricket Club A Grade team.
For the first time in the history of the Yarrawonga Mulwala Cricket Club, two players scored 100s in the same innings; Lawrence with 128 and Casey with 109 not out.
With Benalla winning the toss and batting, it was James Irvine who ripped through the Bushrangers by taking 5 for 14 off 6.2 overs including batsman numbers 2,3,4,5 and 8.
The opening bowling partnership between Irvine and Angus McMillan netted 6 for 22 with McMillan taking 1 for 8 off 4 overs.
Will Sharp again impressed taking 1 for 12 off 6 overs and partnered with Ben Doyle to see Benalla capitulate to be all out for 51 off 20.2 overs. Doyle taking 2 for 16 off 4 overs. Wickets fell steadily; coming in the second, eighth, eleventh, twelfth, nineteenth, twentieth and twenty first overs.
Wicketkeeper Josh Lawrence began the day in fine form with four catches.
The Lakers began the chase with Reid Clarke falling with the score on7; however, Lawrence and Casey joined at the centre wicket and chased down the 51 runs need for victory in 14.4 overs.
The tea break after 16 overs saw the YMCC on 1 for 70 with Lawrence 47 and Casey 16.
After tea, Lawrence showed why he is rated so highly, bludgeoning 81 runs in less than 12 overs; while Casey added another 29 runs in the same time.
Lawrence slayed the Benalla attack for 21 boundaries and 2 sixes before finally being dismissed in the 28th over for 128.
The century was his first for Yarrawonga Mulwala since crossing from the Shepparton competition and takes him to 175 runs from three innings.
His century was pure power and onlookers were impressed by his poise and power when hitting to all parts of the ground. The partnership with Casey was worth 180 runs.
Captain Matt Knight joined Casey at the crease and continued to keep the run rate at a high level adding 73 runs before Knight fell for 38 runs in the 43rd over with the score on 260. Knight scored five boundaries in a valuable knock.
Zach Moore came to the crease joining Casey and continued to turn the strike over contributing an impressive 19 runs with 3 boundaries taking the score to 300 off 50 overs. With 300 on the board, Moore fell accelerating the run rate for 19 and Casey was on 96 in a great innings.
James Irvine with 4 runs and Brock McCabe fell with the score on 307 but with Corey McIntosh at the wicket Casey made his second WDCA A Grade century.
Casey’s innings was impressive in that he batted through the innings arriving in the fourth over and bringing up his century in the fifty fourth over.
McIntosh fell with the score on 310 and McMillan joined Casey and continued to attack with McMillan falling last ball of the day for 2 - leaving Casey 109 not out.
The Yarrawonga Mulwala Cricket finished on 8 for 322, a 271 run win in the round 3 clash with Benalla.
With firstly Irvine with 5 wickets and then Lawrence 128 and Casey 109 not out showcasing a great day of cricket for the Lakers.
The Lakers take on Ovens Valley in the start to the two-day cricket format over the next two Saturdays at the Stan Hargreaves Oval, Victoria Park in Yarrawonga.
