Two cen­turies win the day for the Lak­ers

His­tory was rewrit­ten at the Gar­dens Oval in Be­nalla on Satur­day with cen­turies to both Josh Lawrence and Matt Casey for the Yar­ra­wonga Mul­wala Cricket Club A Grade team.

For the first time in the his­tory of the Yar­ra­wonga Mul­wala Cricket Club, two play­ers scored 100s in the same in­nings; Lawrence with 128 and Casey with 109 not out.

With Be­nalla win­ning the toss and bat­ting, it was James Irvine who ripped through the Bushrangers by tak­ing 5 for 14 off 6.2 overs in­clud­ing bats­man num­bers 2,3,4,5 and 8.

The open­ing bowl­ing part­ner­ship be­tween Irvine and An­gus McMil­lan net­ted 6 for 22 with McMil­lan tak­ing 1 for 8 off 4 overs.

Will Sharp again im­pressed tak­ing 1 for 12 off 6 overs and part­nered with Ben Doyle to see Be­nalla ca­pit­u­late to be all out for 51 off 20.2 overs. Doyle tak­ing 2 for 16 off 4 overs. Wick­ets fell steadily; com­ing in the sec­ond, eighth, eleventh, twelfth, nine­teenth, twen­ti­eth and twenty first overs.

Wick­et­keeper Josh Lawrence be­gan the day in fine form with four catches.

The Lak­ers be­gan the chase with Reid Clarke fall­ing with the score on7; how­ever, Lawrence and Casey joined at the cen­tre wicket and chased down the 51 runs need for vic­tory in 14.4 overs.

The tea break af­ter 16 overs saw the YMCC on 1 for 70 with Lawrence 47 and Casey 16.

Af­ter tea, Lawrence showed why he is rated so highly, blud­geon­ing 81 runs in less than 12 overs; while Casey added an­other 29 runs in the same time.

Lawrence slayed the Be­nalla at­tack for 21 bound­aries and 2 sixes be­fore fi­nally be­ing dis­missed in the 28th over for 128.

The cen­tury was his first for Yar­ra­wonga Mul­wala since cross­ing from the Shep­par­ton com­pe­ti­tion and takes him to 175 runs from three in­nings.

His cen­tury was pure power and on­look­ers were im­pressed by his poise and power when hit­ting to all parts of the ground. The part­ner­ship with Casey was worth 180 runs.

Cap­tain Matt Knight joined Casey at the crease and con­tin­ued to keep the run rate at a high level adding 73 runs be­fore Knight fell for 38 runs in the 43rd over with the score on 260. Knight scored five bound­aries in a valu­able knock.

Zach Moore came to the crease join­ing Casey and con­tin­ued to turn the strike over con­tribut­ing an im­pres­sive 19 runs with 3 bound­aries tak­ing the score to 300 off 50 overs. With 300 on the board, Moore fell ac­cel­er­at­ing the run rate for 19 and Casey was on 96 in a great in­nings.

James Irvine with 4 runs and Brock Mc­Cabe fell with the score on 307 but with Corey McIn­tosh at the wicket Casey made his sec­ond WDCA A Grade cen­tury.

Casey’s in­nings was im­pres­sive in that he bat­ted through the in­nings ar­riv­ing in the fourth over and bring­ing up his cen­tury in the fifty fourth over.

McIn­tosh fell with the score on 310 and McMil­lan joined Casey and con­tin­ued to at­tack with McMil­lan fall­ing last ball of the day for 2 - leav­ing Casey 109 not out.

The Yar­ra­wonga Mul­wala Cricket fin­ished on 8 for 322, a 271 run win in the round 3 clash with Be­nalla.

With firstly Irvine with 5 wick­ets and then Lawrence 128 and Casey 109 not out show­cas­ing a great day of cricket for the Lak­ers.

The Lak­ers take on Ovens Valley in the start to the two-day cricket for­mat over the next two Satur­days at the Stan Har­g­reaves Oval, Vic­to­ria Park in Yar­ra­wonga.
