Teacher in form for baton

Yarrawonga Chronicle - - News - BY ROBERT MUIR

Father of six, youthful looking grandfather, Michael Price, a Year 3 teacher at Sacred Heart Primary, is one of those honoured to have been chosen to carry the Queen’s Commonwealth Games Baton when it visits Yarrawonga on Thursday 15th February next year.

It will be the 58-year-old’s second involvement with Olympics, following the role of Olympic baton carrier regarding the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games.

“What I love about Michael is that he’s such a community man for our community – he knows the school, the community, the parish. He’s just so connected,” Sacred Heart Primary School Principal Arn Gorman told the Yarrawonga Chronicle.

“He’s a member of our teachers relay team, up against the students. Michael’s performances have been exemplary!

“Since Richmond won the flag, it’s inspired him to be better.”

Michael’s friends Mick Lawless, Maurice Coughlan and Geoff (Pistol) Hicks have no doubt about the school teacher’s fitness and ability to run the 200 metres at a lively pace.

In fact, to ensure a scintillating run, Michael’s school colleagues Caity O’Dwyer and Kate Barton have formulated an exhaustive range of exercises for elite athletes.

He is also overseeing the program of teacher colleague Jen Sagiadak who has also been chosen to run with the Queen’s baton.

“I am very proud that two of our teachers have been selected to run with the baton,” Ms Gorman said.

“Obviously people get the role because of how they’re seen in the community and their passion for it. Their selection epitomises the quality of teachers we have here.”

Michael’s family have a unit on the Gold Coast. “The infrastructure which is being constructed is world class and will take the Gold Coast into the next decades with fabulous facilities,” he said.

“There is no doubt that the quality and calibre of the Gold Coast facilities will continue to promote the area as one of Australia’s premiere holiday and lifestyle destinations.

“I’m really looking forward to running with the baton and in the meantime I’m obeying all my advisers’ training instructions.”

Teacher Michael Price surrounded by students who are also thrilled their teacher will run with the Queen’s baton.
