Celebrating local libraries
Move over St Valentine’s because February 14 is also Library Lovers’ Day and Federation Council libraries are celebrating with the community.
Library Lovers’ Day is a chance for everyone to connect with their library and share the library love.
The initiative, coordinated by the Australian Library and Information Association, aims to raise the profile of the services that libraries offer.
Federation Council through its membership with Riverina Regional Library, operates branches in Corowa, Howlong and Mulwala.
A mobile library service also visits the towns of Urana, Oaklands, Boree Creek and Rand on a weekly basis.
Fostering a love of reading, supporting lifelong learning and providing a space for people to connect, libraries play an important role in local communities.
In addition to the extensive range of reading material, eResources and dvds, local libraries offer free computer and wi-fi access, author talks, reading clubs, school holiday programs, storytime sessions for children, community programs and family and local history information – to name just some of the services.
To celebrate Library Lover’s Day, Federation Council is launching a range of new promotional material for its libraries including bookmarks, banners, library bags and a video highlighting the services available.
Federation Council Mayor Pat Bourke is encouraging residents to consider becoming a member of their local library.
“We are really proud of the library services offered across the council area and the new promotional video captures the vibrant, engaging spaces residents can enjoy when they visit one of our libraries,” he said.
As part of Library Lovers Day, residents are being encouraged to send a love letter to their local library outlining what makes it special to them and what they would like to see in the future.
Well known authors have also written letters as part of the initiative, celebrating the significant influence libraries have had on their passion for literature.
The new promotional video is available to view on Council’s website and Facebook.
