ON THE LAND Balldale mobile coverage plea

Yarrawonga Chronicle - - Front Page - BY ROBERT MUIR

A letter and petition seeking assistance to address the lack of mobile coverage in the Balldale area has received the backing of Federation Council.

Balldale resident of five years, Stephen Ward, addressed council’s latest monthly meeting, on January 23 and said the situation has shown no improvement in that time.

“We get the signal off Corowa but we get drop-outs. Susan Ley (Member for Farrer) has said to get council support,” Mr Ward told council.

“I know I am not the only person in our community with this issue but need to address this as a major issue not just from the disadvantage point of a mature resident but it also makes life extremely difficult for our residents students and business owners in Balldale.”

The absence of any street numbers for emergencies was mentioned by Mr Ward.

“The current situation could become life threatening if emergency services cannot be contacted,” he said.

Mr Ward was advised by Cr Shaun Whitechurch, who is up to date with technology, to emphasise the safety aspect when talking to authorities, as this aspect, moreso than increased technology, would provide the best opportunity for earliest improved coverage.

Cr Fred Longmire congratulated Mr Ward on raising the matter and Cr Bronwyn Thomas endorsed his address. “I’ve been involved with Savernake and Rennie. It’s a long drawn out process.”

Mayor Pat Bourke lent his support. “I know as a council it very much concerns us to keep safe villages and districts, and to have these crucial services we need to lobby relevant bodies. I can see you’ve got support of the councillors.”

Federation Council will formally advise its support to Ms Ley for improved mobile coverage in Balldale and district.

Stephen Ward addressed Federation Council.
