Representative tennis success
Yarrawonga’s Lucy Bassett recently represented the Goulburn Region in the prestigious Wayne Arthurs Cup at Kooyong.
The Wayne Arthurs Cup is a tennis event ran by Tennis Victoria and involves the sixteen regions of Victoria each providing teams consisting of 2 boys and 2 girls.
Finishing sixth rarely draws the accolades of a first-place finish.
But for the Goulburn region, the result was as good as standing on the podium.
Finishing sixth out of a pool of 16, Goulburn was the highest-ranked regional team in the competition.
The four-person team made up of Lucy, Shepparton’s Aston Monteleone, Aditya Bhattacharya and Numurkah’s Hannah O’Brien combined spectacularly, showing they could be the future stars of local tennis.
On the first day of competition Goulburn finished second in its group, convincingly accounting for Central Gippsland as well as being too strong for Barwon.
Eventual tournament runner-up BaysideMoorabbin was the pick of the pool, with Goulburn still managing to snare a set against the team which dominated proceedings.
On Day Two, playing off against Peninsula among a tussle for positions five through eight, Goulburn fought its way to a win and a chance to rise up the rankings.
But in the match to decide fifth and sixth Berwick and District ended the local’s golden run.
On a personal note Lucy performed extremely well winning 3 out of 5 singles and 3 out of 5 mixed doubles against the state’s best players.
Lucy will next represent the Goulburn Region in the Frank Sedgman Cup for under 11 players at Bairnsdale in July.
Goulburn representatives Lucy Bassett, Hannah O’Brien, Aston Monteleone and Aditya Bhattacharya finished sixth in the Wayne Arthurs cup at Kooyong.
