Double celebration

-

Yarrawonga born twins Jack Stephens and sister Joan Jewell, nee Stephens amazed locals when they celebrated their 90th birthday together at the Yarrawonga Mulwala Golf Club recently.

The twins were born on May, 17 1928.

From as early as the 1930s Jack carted cows from the family home in the west end of Orr Street down to the weir, a fair hike with a decent size animal on dirt roads.

Around the same time Joan used to spend time in the paddock where Woods Point Nursing Home now stands, as it was a catholic paddock and fly her kite.

Joining them for their celebrations was sister Valda Becroft, nee Stephens and brother Graeme Stephens. All but Jack now resides in Yarrawonga.

They all attended the Yarrawonga Higher Elementary School number 1819 where the school motto was ‘Aim High’.

Add the years of the siblings together and you get a total of 350 years.

This is a double milestone with few twins reaching the age of 90 together.
