I found this photograph after my mother passed away. My initial thought was that it was during the war, but on the reverse, mum had written, ‘mummy, Windsor, 1936’.

My maternal grandfather was in the Blues during World War 1, and my mother spent her childhood at Windsor. The 1939 Register has the family living in Nottinghamshire, and grandfather was employed as a constable for the War Department at Chilwell.

My question is, what was grandma doing in 1936? She seems to be wearing military clothing, and I am intrigued. Can someone throw some light on this? PAT PRITCHARD, VIA EMAIL
