Our Vic­to­rian an­ces­tors had a whole raft of theatre-re­lated slang terms. Roof-scrap­ers were those sit­ting in the top gallery seats; dead­heads were those, such as theatre crit­ics, who didn’t pay for ad­mis­sion.
