According to Gillian Jones’ Lancashire Professional Photographers 1840-1940 (PhotoResearch, 2004), George Alfred Southey (whose details are printed on the verso) occupied premises at 276, Stamford Street, Ashton-under-Lyne, from 1913 to 1939. This is clearly a World War 1 soldier in a very badly fitting uniform, which also appears to be made of poor quality cloth.
