Whilst today, the gothic Houses of Parliament, with Big Ben, feel as if they have been part of London for an eternity, they are actually Victorian. The original medieval palace, which stood on the site, burned to the ground in 1834. Researchers at the University of York, however, have reconstructed St Stephen’s Chapel. This was the chamber where some of the most important constitutional moments took place, such as the passing of the Act of Union in 1707, and the moment King Charles I stormed in demanding the arrest of five MPs, the catalyst for the English Civil War in 1642. This is a godsend for those with ancestors who were early members of the political parties. Access it at https:// tinyurl.com/ydyt599t.
