Manchester was at the forefront of the Industrial Revolution, and the city was the inspiration for Milton in Elizabeth Gaskell’s novel North and South. Go to the Vimeo website at https://tinyurl. com/y9tapupv, and you can go up in a hot air balloon to see 1850s Manchester, with this amazing flyover that Neil Millington created using extensive research from Ordnance Survey Maps.

You can see the scale of the Victorian factories and the huge chimneys towering into the air, which would have polluted the skyline – thankfully, Neil has not recreated this element of the skyline, so we can get a clear view! You can also travel via steam-train at https://tinyurl. com/yc92fvl5 or on foot, at https:// tinyurl.com/yakcsa5a.

In the background, we can see the intact abbey – when today, it is merely a ruin
