The alternative hip-hop legend returns with a new album in tow
A seminal figure among turntablists, DJ Shadow (Josh Davis) greatly contributed to popularizing instrumental hip-hop, putting it on the map with his celebrated 1996 debut album, the classic Endtroducing…..
Inspired by pioneers like Grandmaster Flash and Afrika Bambaataa, who defined hip-hop as “eliminating genre barriers in music,” he remains true to that philosophy, utilizing obscure samples from his gargantuan record collection to craft lively sonic collages from nearly anything – public service announcements, classical strings and heavy metal power chords – into a multifaceted whole.
Twenty years on and enjoying worldwide renown, his fifth record The Mountain Will Fall sees DJ Shadow more ambitious than ever, creating his own sounds to go with his sample vault and teaming up with Run The Jewels, Nils Frahm and even Nas. Though for all the acclaim the long-awaited release has earned him, he remains true to his name – the brighter the light, the darker the shadow.
