Gymnasts to represent Azerbaijan at Baku 2017 identified
Baku vigorously prepares to host 20 sports competitions at the fourth Islamic Solidarity Games to be held on May 12 – 22.
The Games will bring together athletes from every one of the ISSF’s 57 member nations, who are based across four continents. Athletes will compete in 20 sports, across 270 medal events, including football, athletics, wrestling and boxing.
Program of the Games for the first time includes gymnastics which is very important for both the world and the Muslim countries. Athletes from 14 countries will compete in the gymnastics events.
Athletes will compete in three types of gymnastics - rhythmic gymnastics, women's and men's artistic gymnastics, the Baku 2017 press service reported with reference to Azerbaijan Gymnastics Federation.
The first gymnastics event will be held at National Gymnastics Arena on May 12 - the opening day of the Games - and will last for 4 days.
The classification phase on rhythmic gymnastics will take place on May 12-13 and finals will be held on May 14.
The classification phase on artistic gymnastics will take place on May 13-14 and finals will be held on May 15.
Azerbaijan’s hopes in rhythmic gymnastics will be pinned on Marina Durunda, Zhala Piriyeva, Zohra Agamirova, in women artistic gymnastics - Yuliya Inshina, Marina Nekrasova, Maria Smirnova, Ekaterina Tishkova and men artistic gymnastics - Murad Agharzayev, Timur Bayramov and Bense Talas.
The AGF, which was founded in 1956, has experienced revival since 2002 and the renewed federation lifted this popular sport to a new level. Thanks to a high-level and dynamic activity of the Federation, Azerbaijani gymnastics has been able to break into the world sporting arena.
