At the Movies Soon in KSA
Yes, it is confirmed! The Saudi Arabia Producers and Distributors Association has recently announced that Cinema will soon be introduced to Saudi Arabia. Contrary to general misconceptions, cinemas are not prohibited in the kingdom and the lack of a vibrant cinematic presence in KSA is largely due to the lack of knowledge of investors. This insight was even shared with Arab News in August 2015 by president of the Saudi Arabia Cinema Committee.
The time for cinemas in KSA is inching closer: “Meetings and agreements with businessmen to extract building permit for cinemas,” AlTamimi posted on Twitter, November 23, 2015, which was eventually retweeted a whopping 226 times.
If we take a look at the conversations around the topic of cinemas coming to Saudi, we find a lot of positivity and excitement throughout the country.
As a matter of fact, during the winter season, the topic continued to trend: a poll in December 2015 was created by the renowned presenter of Al Arabiya TV, who asked his followers: “Are you for Cinema in Saudi Arabia?” The final results showed that 72% of the 1,946 respondents support cinemas in the kingdom and only 28% were not convinced.
With a tool like Mlive, an instant insights application created by Mindshare, designed to give real time data from consumers, it was easy to go into a comparative poll. The Mlive survey conducted at Mindshare in 2015 in KSA had matching results, as the country had a positive outlook towards the introduction of movie theatres. In the first question, “do you wish there were cinemas in Saudi Arabia?” the results Al Zahrani Twitter poll with 72% for it and 28% against.
In short, with the right tools, we can all be a part of the conversation as change happens in Saudi Arabia.
