and Comic Con was the premier of the trailer for the Emi­ratipro­duced film Ae­ri­als, which pro­duc­ers say is the UAE’S, and pos­si­bly the Arab world’s, first feature-length sci-fi film. The con­ven­tion also pre­miered the trailer to lo­cal film­maker Faisal Hashmi’s lat­est short, Sleight, which en­vi­sions a Dubai in­vaded by aliens com­plete with shots of an alien space­ship hov­er­ing over the Burj Khal­ifa. Date of re­lease is set for early this year.

Cul­tural fes­ti­vals like Shub­bak Fes­ti­val and Emi­rates Lit­fest have hosted pan­els on Arab sci-fi, while lead­ing in­ter­na­tional art fair, Art Dubai, re­cently fea­tured the sci-fi-in­flu­enced work of artist Mehreen Mur­taza. Iraqi author Has­san Blasim is slated to re­lease Iraq +100, a fu­tur­is­tic an­thol­ogy that reimag­ines Iraq and Na­bil Ay­ouch, Morocco's most ac­claimed di­rec­tor, is soon to re­lease his fu­tur­is­tic film en­vi­sion­ing the Arab world in 50 years.
