The much anticipated Arab Idol finale aired live on MBC on Saturday, February 25, garnering a panoply of comments, tweets and reactions among Arab social media users. After a rather successful season, only three finalists were left. The night ultimately ended with Palestinian contestant Yaacoub Shaheen taking home the title, beating fellow Palestinian finalist Amir Dandan and Yemeni contestant Ammar Mohammed and becoming the second Palestinian to win Arab Idol after Mohammed Assaf who was crowned winner in 2013. And with all three finalists coming from countries ravaged by war and conflict, the episode was loaded with emotion, both from the contestants themselves and the jury. The finale also featured live broadcast from Shaheen’s honetown Bethlehem, where hundreds of his supporters, including the town’s mayor, gathered behind a large screen in Manger Square to watch the show.
