Great Plains En­ergy ex­pands in Kansas. The Mis­souri-based power com­pany agreed to buy Wes­tar En­ergy, Kansas’ big­gest util­ity, with 700,000 cus­tomers in the state. The ac­qui­si­tion comes as power com­pa­nies across America look to con­sol­i­date amid ris­ing op­er­a­tional costs and weak­en­ing de­mand. Last year saw more than $52 bil­lion worth of util­ity deals pend­ing or com­pleted in the U.S.
